The Sonnabend Collection Mantua
Housed in the historic Palazzo della Ragione, the Sonnabend Collection Mantua presents one of the most important private art collections of the twentieth century.
Born from the vision of gallerist Ileana Sonnabend, the collection traces the evolution of contemporary art and celebrates the enduring dialogue between America and Europe.
The Clock Tower and the Museum of Time
Built in 1472–73 at the request of Marquis Ludovico II Gonzaga and designed by Luca Fancelli, the Clock Tower houses the ingenious mechanism created by Bartolomeo Manfredi, known as “dell’Orologio” — a Renaissance masterpiece combining art, astronomy, and mechanical science.
Inside, the Museum of Time displays original components of the historic clock, including the fifteenth-century crown, the copper zodiac signs, the pendulum of Foucault, and two nineteenth-century rotating structures that once allowed the clock to be read even at night.
The visit concludes with a breathtaking panoramic view from the top of the tower, offering one of the most spectacular outlooks over Mantua and its lakes.
